Three Charts That Perfectly Outline America's Marijuana Legalization History

With more and more states legalizing marijuana, it can be difficult to remember who actually instituted which laws at what time. Did Alaska legalize cannabis before or after Washington and Oregon? Colorado was the first state to legalize recreational use, but who were the first to do so medicinally?

Luckily someone at SAS Learning Post put together three charts and maps that show a comprehensive and clear timeline for America's marijuana legalization timeline.

First, we have a timeline of when states enacted medical and recreational marijuana laws.

Next we have a timeline showing the same thing, but also showing how many states in every year had some form of legalized marijuana. This one shows which states were pioneers versus followers, particularly when it comes to medical marijuana.

And finally we have a GIF showing all the states and their marijuana legalization status over the years.

Who knows, maybe in a few years we'll be looking at an all green map!

Latest.

Because it has been illegal or stigmatized for decades, the body of cannabis research available is, in many ways, incomplete. But Canada’s federal government is taking advantage of the country’s status as the only G7 country to have legalized marijuana and addressing that issue. It was announced yesterday that nearly 25 million dollars will be used to fund cannabis research in Canada.
